COMMENT: Africa should look at building lasting peace, wealth for its people

Today marks the 57th anniversary of Africa Day. Africa Day is celebrated across the continent, but more so in Ghana, The Gambia, Guinea, Namibia, Zambia, Mali, Mauritania, Lesotho and Zimbabwe, where it is observed as an official national holiday. This important day was born in 1963 when 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the auspices of the newly formed Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The initial process, however, began in 1958 when 17 African nations established African Liberation Day, to commemorate their independence from European colonialism. In 2001, the OAU became the African Union (AU). Due to the impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic, the AU has said this year’s celebrations be held virtually and online under the theme: “Silencing The Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development and Intensifying the Fight against the Covid-19 Pandemic.”

Entembeni fails to provide food, medicines

ENTEMBENI Old People’s Home has hit hard times resulting in the institution failing to provide food and critical medical supplies for elderly inmates suffering from the chronic hypertension and diabetes. The home, situated in Luveve suburb in Bulawayo, is also in dire need of blankets for the 48 inmates who are struggling to adhere to lockdown conditions due to a shortage of masks and sanitisers. Their administrator Ms Naome Mhlanga said all inmates, 38 males and 10 females have hypertension and 10 of them have diabetes. A survey conducted by the Chronicle recently showed that chronic patients are defaulting on essential medication as most pharmacies are demanding payment in foreign currency while those paying in local currency are made to pay more than even the prevailing black-market rate. People with chronic illnesses are supposed to regularly take certain medication for a life time to reduce their risk of succumbing to the diseases and the situation is worse for the elderly at Entumbane who live off donations.

8 year old boy quarantined

AN eight-year-old boy who returned into the country unaccompanied through Victoria Falls border last week has been quarantined in a hotel room. The boy entered the country unaccompanied on Friday from Livingstone in Zambia and could not join his mother who lives in Victoria Falls, in line with Covid-19 regulations that every returning citizen should be isolated for 21 days as part of preventive measures against the pandemic. He is one of the two people who are quarantined at Phezulu Lodge, a new facility identified by the Matabeleland North Covid-19 taskforce to cater for returning citizens who opt not to be accommodated at the conventional centre at Mosi-oa-Tunya High School when the majority are housed. At Phezulu lodge, the boy’s rentals are being paid for by his mother. The other returnee is an adult male also paying for himself.

Strategic M-4 Highway reopened in Syria for first time in years: video

BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:25 P.M.) – On Monday, the M-4 Highway (Aleppo-Hasakah) was officially reopened between the cities of Al-Hasakah and Aleppo, the Russian reconciliation center reported. This road, which has approximately 80 km of it under the control of the Syrian factions loyal to Turkey, is opened for commercial use and has the safety guarantee of the Russian and Turkish armed forces. A senior Russian military official at the Qamishli International Airport told RT Arabic earlier that there will be Russian patrols every day except Friday, to track the movements along the road and prevent any military provocations there. According to the official, there will be joint coordination with the civil administration in the town of Tal Tamr, and any military manifestations of the various forces will be prevented on the road. This is a major event for the people of Syria, as northeastern Syria was mostly cutoff due to years of war and the presence of groups against the government.

Kampala Parents School gets ready for Online Classes Via Zoom

In total, the President sent home over 15 million scholars. But as the pandemic persisted, governments and schools are devising ways by which they can be able to teach their students. And with this, technology has come handy as schools turn to the internet to conduct classes and deliver lessons. Recently, Kampala Parents School announced online classes for pupils from pre-primary (Middle and Top classes of nursery section) to primary seven-candidate who will sit for the national Primary Leaving Examinations.

Smugglers expose communities to Covid-19

SMUGGLING syndicates have turned illegal crossing points dotted along the Limpopo River into permanent camping sites where huge consignments of goods worth millions of dollars are illegally brought in and out of the country daily, exposing communities living along the Zimbabwe-South Africa border to Covid-19. The smugglers use hired inflatable boats to ferry the smuggled goods across the river to either side of the border for varying fees ranging from R150 to R500 depending on the weight of the load. Several people, mostly regular cross border traders who make a living out of buying and selling goods sourced from South Africa, are the main culprits. They are defying lockdown regulations by illegally crossing the border, raising concerns of the spread of the coronavirus in areas lying along the border. The smugglers do not even take extra precautions to curb the spread of Covid-19 such as wearing face masks and sanitising. South Africa has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in Africa.
