Shameful

Dear Editor, It was disturbing that a cop in Uttarakhand allegedly tried to rape a woman at a quarantine centre. The Surajmal Institute located in Pulbhatta has been turned into a quarantine centre, where people coming to the area, are being asked to stay. Among the inmates of the quarantine centre is a newly-wed couple. Allegedly, the policeman went to the newly-wed couple's room located on the second floor. After reaching there, the accused grabbed the woman's hand and started taking her to a room located on the first floor. As per the police complaint, the accused was inebriated when the incident took place. However, it is an obvious misbehaviour of policeman. It is extremely condemnable, specially when it was committed by a person, who is responsible for safety of people. His misbehaviour not only stigmatized his family, but also defamed the group of security forces. Culprit must be punished. --M N Musaeed Jogeshwari Mumbai

School districts struggle with student food insecurity

SACRAMENTO – (INT) - Food insecurity—either concerns around having enough food or outright hunger—has increased sharply across California. Nationally, among children age 12 and under, the rate is up 14 points—from about 3% in 2018 to 17% in April 2020. During the ongoing COVID-19 school closures, even large districts appear to be serving fewer free and low-cost meals than before the pandemic, while rural or small districts face their own challenges in reaching students. Typically about 3.7 million California students, or 60%, qualify for free or reduced-price meals, a number that likely shot up under shelter-in-place orders. When classes are in session, these students may receive most of their food at school. Since schools closed in March, districts have set up more than 4,700 grab-and-go sites to continue providing meals to students, the Public Policy Institute of California found. Many districts provide meals to everyone under the age of 18. San Diego Unified is distributing one extra breakfast and lunch to…

In January, Viktor Kiš, a sculptor and festival organizer with little museum experience, was installed by the Serbian prime minister as acting director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade (MoCAB). Although it might not allay local professionals’ concerns about favoritism and expertise, the first project under the new directorship—the ephemeral takeover of one of the museum’s spaces by the Turkish collective :mentalKLINIK—nonetheless serves as a choice metaphor for the hollowing out of public institutions laid bare by the Covid-19 crisis. The site of this installation is likewise fraught.

Letter - Prioritising mental health for learners amid and post-Covid-19

Learners, teachers, parents and the government cannot wait for education to return to its traditional classroom setting. The Covid-19 pandemic appears to be under control in Namibia and some education stakeholders have agreed that schools should commence on 3 June 2020, for pupils in critical grades, especially in grade 11 and 12. However, this should be conducted in a strategic manner, taking all impacts of Covid-19 into consideration, to ensure that when school starts, teaching and learning is carried out effectively.
