'Modest improvement' in Bay Area air quality expected

If you've suddenly become addicted to checking the air quality index, you're not alone. As days of bad Bay Area quality seem to drag on indefinitely, everyone on the West Coast is eager for clear skies. Fresh ocean air isn't in the forecast yet, but conditions should improve as the weekend ends, the National Weather Service forecasts. Southwest winds are expected to arrive beginning Sunday evening, bringing with them "modest improvement" in air quality.

Tropical Storm Sally expected to strengthen into hurricane as it moves toward New Orleans

Tropical Storm Sally pounded south Florida with heavy rain on Saturday before moving into the Gulf of Mexico, and forecasters believe that by Tuesday morning, Sally could hit near New Orleans as a Category 2 hurricane. The storm is strengthening as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico, and as of Sunday night has sustained winds of 60 mph, CNN reports. Hurricane warnings have been issued for parts of Louisiana and Mississippi, where storm surges of up to 11 feet are possible. Forecasters also say some areas between southeast Louisiana and the western Florida Panhandle could see extreme rainfall of more than 12 inches. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) declared a state of emergency on Saturday, and said on Sunday while he does not yet know where Sally will make landfall, "we have every reason to believe that this storm represents a very significant threat to the people of southeast Louisiana." Sally is the 18th named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season; the average for a season is 12. Catherine Garcia

Glacier twice the size of Manhattan breaks off the Arctic's largest ice shelf

Climate change is warming more than just the U.S.'s west coast. Up north in Greenland, a 42-square-mile glacier broke off the Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf as ocean temperatures continue to warm. The Spalte Glacier has been disintegrating for several years, and after another year of record highs, finished its break this summer, BBC reports. The Spalte Glacier was a piece of Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden, a massive ice shelf at the end of Northeast Greenland Ice Stream. It only recently became the largest remaining ice shelf as others also began to melt in warming waters. But it's starting to lose its area as well, as the part Greenland surrounding the ice stream has warmed by about 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1980. Satellite imagery had shown the Spalte Glacier offshoot cracking since 2013, Business Insider notes. The broken Spalte Glacier and remaining ice shelf will only continue to melt as runoff water from melting pools on top of the ice. ❄️ The #Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf is experiencing the effects…

The 8-week long campaign is aimed at jump-starting the country’s tourism, with focus on the domestic market, in addition to putting a spotlight on some of the country’s prized tourist attractions. Addressing the audience at the Virtual launch of the campaign, the Uganda Tourism Board CEO, Lilly Ajarova noted the opportunity presented by the COVID-19 pandemic,  saying that because of the pandemic, destinations have been inclined to look inwards. “The pandemic has created an opportunity for us to look inwards and therefore travel our country. It is a delight to launch this domestic tourism campaign today as part of the efforts by the board to not only encourage domestic travel but also close the seasonality gap that has been created,” Ajarova said. “Furthermore, the campaign aims to both create awareness and also educate Ugandans on the various tourist spots around the country; with emphasis on What?
